‘I’m bored when I’m not riding’: Billy Loughnane on drive that made him champion jockey at 20

Billy Loughnane's mother had hoped he would become a veterinarian. "You'd have to ask her why," he says, a grin never far from his face. "I'd guess it's about money and an easier life, but I always knew I wanted to be a jockey and made that very clear. My parents and family have been incredibly supportive ever since."

It’s safe to say Loughnane made the right call. This Saturday at Ascot, the 20-year-old will be formally crowned Flat racing's new champion jockey, making him the youngest to achieve this in over a century. Pat Eddery was 22 when he claimed his first title, Frankie Dettori was 23, and Lester Piggott—who rode his first winner at just 12—was twice that age when he secured his inaugural championship.
